Older Homes of        Bayou La Batre
Graham House in Coden
Ca. 1900s - ????
This house was featured in the Mobile Press Register back Oct. 3, 2002. It had been recently bought and was being restored. I collected some information on this house while it was for sale in 2002. It was owned at one time by the Graham family. While looking through old papers from Frederick I believe I found a photo taken from the second story looking down at a large boat that had floated up in the yard.
I wish the new owners good luck
on the next big storm!
Update; This house did survive Katrina.
Home of Angus M. Crenshaw
Ca. 1892 - 1934
This home still standing in down-town BLB was once owned by
Mr. and Mrs. Angus M. Crenshaw.
The age of the home is unknown but photos date back to 1907. Angus' wife died in 1921. Angus owned this house till his death in 1934.
Update; This home burned before Katrina and the top story was completly burned inside. No one was living in it before the storm. It flooded but survived the storm and in early 2007 it was still there marked ("Red X'ed") to be torn down.
Taken 2000 or 2001
Taken 2007 after burning and flooding
Taken 2007 of the kichen. The house has hardly been remodeled inside since the early 1900's
"The Smith House"
Hotel from Ca. 1906 - ????
This building still standing in down-town BLB was once a Hotel called "The Smith House" The date of this building is unknown but photos date it back to Ca. 1906. Was owned by Mrs. T. D. Smith in the early 1900's.
Update; Before Katrina someone seamed to be trying fix it up. It flooded in the storm and now has been gutted and in early 2007 marked to be torn down.
Taken 2000 or 2001
Taken early 2007 (I don't know what they were doing to the side of it when I took this!)
First Baptist Church
Ca. 1880's - Present
The land for this church I have been
told was given by Melinda Crenshaw Arnett.
As you can tell from the photo there
has been many additions added to
the building including being bricked.
The earliest mention of the
church I have is the wedding of my
Great Grandparents in 1892..
Update; The church was flooded durring Katrina and took quite a bit of damage but was repaired quickly so it beat the "Red X"
