The Bayou La Batre Historical Homepage
_____________________________________________________________________________
The recognized founder of Bayou La Batre is Joseph Bosarge, born circa 2-26-1726 in Pointers, France.

Bayou La Batre was a resort town in the late 1800's early 1900's. The Bay Shore Railroad built in the late 1800's supplied plenty of tourists. The area was well known for it's medicinal spring water, and there where many place to stay like "The Smith House" and "Bromburg Springs"

The storm of 1906 was the start of the down fall of this small town.
Then there was the storm of 1916 that was not as bad as the 06 storm. Then the 1926 storm.

Now this town is some what forgoten but at one time it was the place to go, along with the beautiful and luxurious but almost even more forgotten Coden.

Many in Bayou La Batre  were fishermen and fishing is still going in this bayou's waters today but of course it's not as good as in the old days.

Hurricane Katrina
Sept. 2nd 2005
Al Governor  says on CNN over 2000 homeless in Bayou La Batre.

Sept 28th 2005
I, Amanda K. Howell
visited BLB and Coden.
On the bay front many homes just gone. People look to be in need of clean dry houseing. I saw very few FEMA trailers.
