The First Meeting

Nicholas and Alexandra first met at the wedding of Alexandra's older sister to Nicholas's Uncle at Petterhof. Nicholas saw Alexandra again four years later when she went to Russia to visit her sister. He found her prettier then before.

Nicholas wanted to marry Alexandra but to Alexandra this was impossible She would not convert to Russian Orthodoxy which she would have to do to marry the Tsarevich.

Nicholas was very upset when he received a rejection to his proposal.

Dec.17 1893

"My dearest Alex,

Please eccuse my not having answered you letter sooner, but you may well imagine what a blow it proved to me. I could not write to you all these days on account of the sad state of mind I was in............ Nicky"

Nicholas was advised to get help from Alexandra's grandmother Queen Victoria. With Victoria's help Alexandra agreed to marry Nicholas.

A cloud of sadness was to cover the wedding though. Nicholas's father Tsar Alexander III died nearly two weeks before the wedding.

"My wedding was the continuation of the funeral, only I was dressed in white." Alexandra
